Married With Children
The show “Married... with Children” is about a chaotic white trash family, the Bundys. This sitcom involves two very unbalanced married partners and their children. They live disharmoniously in Chicago. Married… with Children features a role reversal between the typical image of a husband and wife. In most cases the man of the family is the lazy one that never does any thing, but in “Married… with Children” the wife is bone-lazy and spiteful. Al has a miserable and badly paying work. But they will always stay together, or as Al, the father of the family, says, "Love, hate, look, we're a family, what's the difference?" (Al… with Kelly). The plot of this sitcom is a parody on US family sitcoms of the mid-eighties, and so the working title of the show was "Not The Cosbys." Main issues in Married... with Children are sex, failures, indifference, parasitism and falseness. But the characters' lives go on, or as Al says, "Bundys are losers, not quitters." (Kelly Doesn’t Live Here Anymore). Its characters are usually politically incorrect, and some of them are more or less dumb. During its 10 production years, the show changed a lot, but the Bundy family always stays together. Peg and Al have been together, for b
There is an ongoing conflict between Al and Peggy that stems from the role reversal because it is awkward responding normally when things are backwards. Al has a hard time showing and telling Peggy how he really feels about her. “Now just 'cause I don't go to bed with you, doesn't mean I don't love ya. I mean, let's face it, even if you were beautiful, like that girl on TV, I'd still ignore ya. 'Cause your my wife” (Thinnergy). As a result of this treatment Peggy is usually upset with Al which creates more conflict. Even with all the conflicts between husband and wife they manage to stick together. And though they never met there expectations they have accepted there roles in society. “The Bundys' proud name was built on a philosophy of lying. Well, lying, owing money and perhaps beer. Yes, lying, owing money and beer. The only thing that separates us from the Kennedys is that they have money” (The Wedding Repercussions). "The minute a Bundy has good luck he immediately starts building up an equal amount of bad luck." (Luck Of The Bundys). “It's what keeps us from being happy. There's no point in fighting. It's what separates us from the ordinary losers. They can have their moments, but not us. Never us. Your mother is just a Bundy by marriage. She's part of the curse. But we are blood Bundys. We are truly doomed” (Peggy Turns). In 1989, Terry Rakolta, started a fight against the show as she objected to it as negativity towards families. She wrote to all the sponsors of the series and took part in several talk shows to stop “Married... with Children.” The show lost a few sponsors for a short time, but Rakolta's fight made people curious about this series.
