Hate Crimes

In our century, and in earlier centuries, members of the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender community have been persecuted because of their sexual orientation. This has been a colossal dilemma in society for several years. As far back as Sapho and prior, humanity has been ill treated because of how a large portion of society is looked down upon. There are many cases even in the past decade that prove this. Gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender people are the third highest category of hate crimes committed on minorities. The first two are race and religion. The GLBT community is now being treated like African Americans in the late 19th and early 20th century. These are called hate crimes.

The most recent famous gay persecution is that of Matthew Shepard. Mat was murdered on October 12th 1998. That day, the media from all over went to Laramie Wyoming where Mat went to college. His murder prompted unprecedented media coverage and focused the nation's attention on anti-gay hate crimes like never before. Mat’s father Dennis can describe Matthew the best. He says:

“Matt’s gift was people. He loved being with people, helping people, and making others feel good. The hope of a better world free of harassment and discrimin

I feel that we live in a materialistic world. Since we judge material object and were brought up that way, we will always judge each other in the same way. The world continues only because of fear. Fear drives us. It’s impossible to not fear one thing or another. For example, most people fear money. So they live for their money. Day by day they go to work and pay their bills. They fear they will lose their money or won’t have enough to pay their bills. This is how most of us live. Some fear death or even another person. What I am trying to say is that some people fear the GLBT community and that is why they attack them one way or another. The majority of people who do attack or fight against GLBT people do it for religious reasons. They say that being gay is a sin so they hurt the people who are. What I am wondering is, don’t religious people say the God loves everyone? Then why do these people hurt other people for something they don’t even understand? My theory is they live in fear.

Not only did the brutal attack effect Matthew and his family and friends, but the whole town of Laramie. Media stormed into the town and stayed for long periods of time while persistently galling all of Laramie. As one native of Laramie points out, “Honey, it’s still all about Laramie.” Matthew Shepard’s story was made into a theatre production, which then became the film “The Laramie Project” in 2002. The film stars Peter Fonda, Janeane Garofalo, Clea DuVall, Joshua Jackson, and many other very talented actors. Matthew’s friends, family, and the world mourned his death that day and many will never forget.

Another thing that adds to the fear that gays endure is HIV/AIDS. The fact that this virus exists is no ones fault from the now. But the government doesn’t seem to grant money for the r
