All quiet on the Western Front is a book by Erick Maria Remarque. It takes place during World War I on the French Front. Paul Baumer is a boy of 19 years, who voluntarily joined the Army with several of his friends after hearing a patriotic speech given at his school. Paul and his friends realized that being patriotic comes with a costs – hard work, brutal life and harsh training. Paul and his friends realized that War is not as honorable as it is made to sound. After two weeks Paul’s Company returns from fighting with a 150 men. A group of new recruits are sent to join the Company. Kat, a friend of Paul’s, prepares a dinner for his Company in order to share his ideas. At dinner he suggests that if all soldiers were treated the equally, fed the equally and got paid the equally, War would immediately stop. Kropp, Paul’s friend believes that leaders should set
When it is dark, the men go to lay barbwire in front, but are attacked by the artillery. Little by little men are being killed around them. After the men return back to the camp, they think about what they are going to do at the end of the War. Most of the men feel that the War will never end. Paul wonders if the War did end what he will do. The Company gets caught in a gruesome battle. Paul feels that to keep himself alive, he must trust his instincts. After that battle the men count goes from 80 to 32. The next battle injures Paul and Kropp. They bribe the surgeon with cigars so that they can be place in a hospital for care. Paul goes through surgery and Kropp has his leg amputated. In the Fall of 1918, Paul is the only one left of his friend. They were all killed one by one. And in October 1918, Paul is killed.
