John Adams

John Adams, David McCullough, published by Touchstone in Rockefeller Center in New York, New York, copyright 2001,727 pages including bibliography and index.

In this powerful biography, the journey of John Adams life is told in a novel like way that enables a reader to feel as if they have lived the life with Mr. Adams. The book was written and addresses some very different times in the founding of our colonies and nation.

One year after the marriage of Susanna Boylston and John Adams (known as Deacon John), the union was blessed with a son John Adams whom was named after his father on October 19, 1735. Deacon John believed that virtue and independence with religion were among the highest moral achievements. These values were passed down to future generations in the Adams family.

The childhood and upbringing of John was a solid one, his father believing in values and education. John at age fifteen was sent to Harvard. Upon graduation, John began his chosen career of being a lawyer. After a courtship of nearly five years on October 25, 1764 John and Abigail Smith Adams were married. The marriage of John to Abigail was the most important decision of his life, as would become apparent over time. Abigail was in all resp

The beginning of his service was difficult for John he was not accustomed to sitting back and listening to others debate the decisions instead he was used to running the debates. The first term, as Vice President was a difficult one for him with more absences from his wife and with the press criticism at his every move and statement. John was able in his term to have the deciding vote in two important decisions, the Judiciary Act which established a federal court system and the size of the Supreme Court. John would serve an additional term as Vice President for President George Washington before being named president himself on March 4, 1797 with the nomination and acceptance of Thomas Jefferson to serve as Vice President. The time as president passed for John rather quickly with many accomplishments, turmoil’s and trials for himself and his adored wife.

On Wednesday, October 28, 1818 the day was proven to be the worse for John Adams, his beloved wife and dear friend Abigail passed away from typhoid fever. For John and all of Quincy it was a long mourning period. In the obituary dedicated to Abigail Adams it was said that she “possessed at every period of her life, the unlimited confidence as well as affection of her husband, she was admitted at all times to share largely of his thoughts, she possessed a mind elevated in its views and capable of attainments above the common order of intellects.” This period in life was difficult for the Adams family. When 1826 arrived it would mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it was not long into the year that John was requested to as a signer of the Declaration join the celebrations. John responded that he would be unable to attend. John had visitors on Friday, June 30 to request of him to make a toast for the celebration in Quincy for July 4; his response was “Independence Forever!” When asked if he wanted to add something more, he replied “Not a word”.

Beginning in the second division of the biography it begins to describe the appointment of John Adams to serve in London, France and
