The ible Essay

Are We a Product of Our Own Decisions

Are we a product of our decisions or the society in which we live? Which one does really carve the path of our lives and destiny? Is it the environment that indeed influences our life, or is it the will that strives within us? Do your actions speak your words? Or you’re being eaten up by the flow of the society that you’re moving in? We can say that we are a product of both, but how far does your will stand? How much does the society influence your life?

“In my point of view, we are all products of our decisions, bad or good; it is fueled by our will and our own desires.” Though affected by the way our environment moves and works, still in every chapter of our lives, you’ll realize that in that certain state and certain spot, it was you, and only you, who brought yourself in there… Whether be good or bad, it is your will, your own will to be doing such actions. And the question of satisfaction always takes place, our search for satisfaction that brings us to complicated decisions that we need to make… Can you find satisfaction by being a puppet controlled by the way our society works? Can u???

One more of those characters who stands by their will is Reverend John Hale, being part of the church who condemns the devil’s work and an expert on battling witchcraft, which on the beginning acted the way he should be as a minister, but later on turned his back and pursued what he believed in. The character of Reverend Hale fights a battle between what ideals that have been engraved in his mind by books and society, and what he feels is right. In the end his soul prevails by doing what is right and fair, he is able to see the falsity in the trials and become dedicated to saving the lives of those who were innocent. Giving a lot of arguments to Danforth’s decisions and having his stand for believing the accused persons, especially to John Proctor. “I believe him! This girl has always struck me false! She has-”(119) A total change from being a religious puritan, letting no one in his way in God’s name, to someone who values life and truth, even it means going against Danforth and the others being fooled by Abigail Williams. “I denounce this proceedings, I quit this court!”(126)

In comparison with Arthur Miller, the only difference is the setting and plot of the story, wherein John was prosecuted at the time of the hysterical Puritans, while Miller was prosecuted in the panic-stricken times of the “Red Scare”. Whereas in John’s time, witches are the ones being rid off, and in the McCarthyism era, suspected communists are being eradicated throughout the country. A great job indeed for Arthur Miller,
