Every aspect of life either kills us or makes us stronger. Frederic is a very brave person, but has been fooled to think that he is unstoppable. Frederic takes a change on love, not knowing what will happen. Frederic tries to make a move on this nurse, Catherine, which shows some bravery. What kind of person will make a move on a woman when they do not now each other well. This man would have to be brave. Frederic makes his move and she slaps him in the face. Bravery is not always rewarded.

At first Frederic is brave; but after Catherine slaps him in the face, he is not so brave to take a chance on love so quickly again. Love is a great motivation for Frederic. However Catherine dies in the end of the novel and all of the love motivation fades way. Frederic becomes less brave and just wants to get away from anything that could hurt him in anyway. There is no more motivation with no love and away from the war there is no reason to be motivated by that either. When Catherine dies, a piece of Frederic’s soul went with her, not to mention their child, that did not even get a chance to experience life or love. Frederic leaves the war and his love dies, and in turn he loses all bravery and all motivation. Hemingway wrote this outcome because he was a bitter old man who loved and lost in the war. This novel is based on his experience in the war and the betrayal he felt when his love left him, so he made the love in his novel die.
