A farewell to arms
Love and war can have many effects on a person. In the novel A Farewell to Arms written by Earnest Hemingway the central character is a young man by the name of Frederic Henry. Fredric is effected by love and war and this causes him to change quite a bit. The novel takes place in Italy during the First World War. Frederic is an american and is an ambulance driver. During the course of the war, Frederic experiences love and war, which are just a few aspects that can cause change. Love can make a person softer, more caring, but it can also make a person selfish. Love can change a person’s personality. Frederic is brave, and is motivated. Bravery is something not a lot of people have but Frederic shows his bravery through some tough times. Every aspect of life either kills us or makes us stronger. Frederic is a very brave person, but has been fooled to think that he is unstoppable. Frederic takes a change on love, not knowing what will happen. Frederic tries to make a move on this nurse, Catherine, which shows some bravery. What kind of person will make a move on a woman when they do not now each other well. This man would have to be brave. Frederic makes his move and she slaps him in the face. Bravery is not always rewarded.
At first Frederic is brave; but after Catherine slaps him in the face, he is not so brave to take a chance on love so quickly again. Love is a great motivation for Frederic. However Catherine dies in the end of the novel and all of the love motivation fades way. Frederic becomes less brave and just wants to get away from anything that could hurt him in anyway. There is no more motivation with no love and away from the war there is no reason to be motivated by that either. When Catherine dies, a piece of Frederic’s soul went with her, not to mention their child, that did not even get a chance to experience life or love. There is no more motivation with no love and away from the war there is no reason to be motivated by that either. Frederic leaves the war and his love dies, and in turn he loses all bravery and all motivation. Hemingway wrote this outcome because he was a bitter old man who loved and lost in the war. This novel is based on his experience in the war and the betrayal he felt when his love left him, so he made the love in his novel die. War and love can have many effects on a persons thinking and personality. The war makes Frederic brave and it also gives him motivation. Loves makes Frederi
