Land of the Free, Home of the Fat

Land of the Free and Home of the Fat

Our nation possesses a serious disorder that is infecting people of all ages and knows no limits based on income or ethnical background. It causes children to have biochemical or clinical cardiovascular risk factors such as hyperlipidemia, elevated blood pressure, and increased insulin levels. It triggers high blood cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, gallbladder disease, and osteoarthritis in adults (Must). Surpassed only by smoking in terms of total mortality rates, obesity is plaguing our nation as one of the most deadliest diseases a citizen can possess (Allison). The culprit of this ailment is not the citizens themselves, but the society controlling these people. The “American Way” of living causes its people to be fat.

One definition of the word fat, as defined by The American Heritage Dictionary, is “the best or richest part: ‘living off the fat of the land’”. The American population has exploited this definition of the word fat, and has surpassed the healthy limit of “living off the fat of the land”, causing the majority of Americans to become obese. Funk and Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia says that one is considered overweight w

On top of being fast paced, American people are also known for their “get more for your money” mindset. In response, fast food chains have come up with every possible answer to satisfy their customers. Now you can add those 660 calories worth of refined sugar and starch by super sizing for just 68 cents! (Landsburg).

In conclusion, America’s obesity problem is due to deeply embedded customs that have been developing for the past twenty years. If large strides of improvement are not taken soon, we will switch from being known as the great melting pot to being known as the big pot of lard.

Another social trend that has affected Americans’ waistlines is the acceptance of being fat. In 1956, the President’s Council of Physical Fitness implemented broad-based fitness goals for all young people and supported such slogans as “When the aliens land they’ll eat the fat people first!” When the 80’s rolled around the so-called fat acceptance movement caused people to face the risk of getting sat on if caught making fun of a fat person. As best said by the magazine Muscular Fitness, “Coolified by MTV and glued to the tube with an acquired taste for deep fried junk food, much of our youth is trapped in its corpulence.”

In addition to the many scientific advancements, America’s money-hungry, fast-paced economy also plays a huge roll it its own fatness. Promptness is so important that it seems like the majority of people are always running late. This causes families to grab something quick to eat rather than preparing a well-balanced, healthy meal. Fast food industries thrive on this characteristic and so do our fat cells (Mankiewicz).

Because physical activity may prevent obesity, improve obesity-associated comorbidities, reduce mortality, and have beneficial effects on a variety of other chronic di
