Big Reasons for Being Small

Could anorexia in girls be triggered by fear of becoming a woman? Or could it be linked to a domineering grandmother, an abusive father, pictures of skinny supermodels, wrong dieting habits, television soap operas, insane parents, depression, shopping, modern living, or even something in the water supply? Eating disorders are a growing epidemic grossly affecting females and the answer of “why” remains unrevealed. From anorexia nervosa to bulimia nervosa, females experience pressures that can inevitably force them to question their body and to change their figure. Anorexia and bulimia have similarities in that anorexia people do not eat enough while bulimic people engage in binges followed by vomiting. Scholars are analyzing eating disorder cases and are working to find the reasons behind them. Becky Thomson, author of “A Way Outa No Way,” addresses eating disorders from a novel perspective; she attempts to destroy the view that eating disorders solely affect white, upper-class women by recognizing how the disorder is case-specific. Over the last one hundred years, scholars have developed theories of the causes of eating disorders, primarily focusing on the social pressures behind the disorder. However, various intricat

Another example that can be taken from history books comes from Dr. John Morgan, eating disorder specialist at St. George’s Hospital. Dr. Morgan found that there was another cause of eating disorders: family pressures. Dr. Morgan read about a 10th century saint who did not want to get married as her father wished, so he grew angry at her reluctance to follow her father’s orders. The young child felt that the only way out and the only way to gain control was to stop eating; in more technical terms, she formed an eating disorder. Eventually, the innocent girl was crucified by her father and became a saint. This primeval story explains how anorexia is an ancient disorder that was caused by familial pressures to fit a certain norm. Dr. Morgan’s research confirms the purposal that eating disorders have numerous origins; this explanation being one of them (Eating Disorders Mirror Mirror).

e causes exist that are often overlooked, thus showing the individuality of each case. Cases by case, eating disorders have their own story, cause and distinctiveness that cannot be compared to another case.

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to what causes eating disorders and that is what disappoints people. To those who know someone with an eating disorder, view eating as a pleasure, an indulgence that cannot be taken from them. To most people, an enormous mental block forms when thinking about how some people can get distressed in their attitude toward eating. Observers cannot understand why sufferers of eating disorders would harm their health by stop eating. Instead of creating a constant battle of what causes people to become victim to eating disorders, society needs to acknowledge that there is no single root. There is an urgency that has been given added impetus by research confirming fears that anorexia causes life-long bone problems. Unfortunately, the problem for sufferers, their families and clinicians, is that there is unlikely to be a single cure for the condition. The causes, whether they are traumatic events, false perception of the perfect body image or genetics, illustrate the complexity and case specificity of eating disorders.

Despite the previous scientific outlook on the causes on eating disorders, eating disorders are also a result of coping with a traumatic event. Although anorexia and bulimia have been
