Metropolitan Museum of Arts

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the most well known museums, not only in America, but in the whole world. Many people come to this great city just to visit this incredibly popular museum. The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 and is located in New York City’s Central Park along Fifth Avenue. It is visited by more than 5 million people annually from all over the world (An overview of the museum, para. 1). The museums collection includes more than two million works of art spanning 5,000 years of world culture, from prehistory to the present and from every part of the globe (An overview of the museum, para. 2). The two-million-square-foot building has a great variety of different collections. For example, “the American Wing houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of American paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, presently including 24 period rooms that offer an unparalleled view of American history and domestic life” (An overview of the museum, para. 3).

I have to fill up an empty page in my life about museums and art galleries as soon as possible. It will help to develop my imagination and perception of art.

The ornament is the invention of the German-born engraver Gustave Young, whose crisp and elegant scrollwork set the standard for all future American firearms decoration (Colt Third Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver, para 2). The revolver is made of a steel body and walnut handle. The gold inlay includes a bust of George Washington, and the arms of the United States in a low relief on the frame. The gun was presented as a gift to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by George and Butonne Repaire in 1995 (Colt Third Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver, para 3).

When I saw the painting “Sleeping Venus” by Thomas Sully, I immediately saw the obvious similarity with painting “Venus of Urbino” by Titian. The portrayed woman is also almost naked lies on a bed and covers her intimate part with a hand. Her eyes are closed; her head is leaned back a little bit showing an expression of pleasure on her face. Her entire posture is only about relaxation. The woman is very go
