The Holy Land in Crisis

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the oldest, most complicated, conflicts that stretches back to biblical times and the Roman Empire (The Israeli-Palestinian conflict – Sadly Unique 1). The two main points of conflict are the city of Jerusalem and Palestinian boarders (The Israeli-Palestinian conflict – Sadly Unique 1-2). Israel claims Jerusalem as its capital, and also claims a hill on the city, which they call the Temple Mount. However, the Palestinians lay claim to East Jerusalem, as they want it to be the capital of an independent Palestine state. In addition, Palestinians also declare the rights to the Temple Mount, which the Muslims refer to as the Noble Sanctuary (Holliday “Jerusalem’s holy sites”). The boarder conflict began over 2000 years ago (The Israeli-Palestinian conflict – Sadly Unique 2). The current situation is that Israel wants to control some or all of the Gaza Strip and West Bank (where the Israelis have situated a military presence for defense). Before the beginning of Christianity, the Middle East had already seen the rise and decline of many famous empires (i.e. Egyptians, Babylonians, and Persians). Judaism, evolved among the Hebrews as the first monotheistic religion (Kublin “Early History”). Three centuries later, the Romans began their own conquest (Kublin “Greeks, Romans, Arabs”). This is when the conflict involving territory began. The name ‘Palestine’ was given to the land of Israel by a local Roman ruler who was defeated by a group of Jewish rebels (The Israeli-Palestinian conflict – Sadly Unique “Territory”). This name was an attempt to destroy and eliminate any memory of the people of Israel and their biblical inheritance. When the Romans and Greeks invaded the Middle East, they displaced the Israelites from their homeland. The Palestinians, therefore, had no right to take land and homes from the Israelis. However, this was done long before they existed (The Israeli-Palestinian conflict – Sadly Unique “Territory”). When the West Roman Empire collapsed, the Byzantine (Eastern) Empi
