Oedipus was born into a cursed life in which he had no control. The separation from his parents after the prophecy would not change his fate. He was born and raised by people whom he thought to be his parents. He behaved in a manner that any normal person would under his circumstances. Unaware of the situation he was in, Oedipus could not be blamed for his actions.
In the beginning of the story, Oedipus is given his fate by a blind prophet. He is deemed to kill his father and marry his mother. When Oedipus meets the man in the road on his journey away from his parents, he has no idea that it is his real father. As far as he knows, he has just left his father to keep from killing him. Now there is a man in the road causing a confrontation in which he loses and dies. I agree that even though Oedipus did commit the immoral act of murder, he was merely defending himself. He could not have possibly known that he completed half of the prophecy. After he kills his real father, he moves on to marry his mother, not knowing who she really is.
