Language Skill And Job Market
Have you ever thought of those huge benefits that the knowledge of many different languages earns you in today’s globalized market sector? Not yet! Then you better start learning new languages and possess good communicative skills in all those that you learn because, with the world turning towards more globalization kind of perspectives, you will definitely need those skills to earn you a decent job in the present and the future. This is the topic that my paper will present to you. The point that I am trying to make is that in today’s globalized world, corporations and big service sectors are trying to look for employees with multi-lingual knowledge and good communicative skills because, the whole economy of these developed nations has over the century changed from and industrialized to a service kind. The primary source for my paper is certainly the lecture by Ms. Monica Heller on the topics of globalization and its effect of the language skills that people need to possess to earn a living. This lecture event by Ms. Heller was called ‘Language & Globalization’ and was about an hour long. The event that this paper talks about was one, which to a large extent discusses the evil strategies that globalization inculcates int
Her lecture began with the definitions of two most popular terms in the service sector that Canada has; the first term was ‘Francophones’ and the other was ‘Anglophones’. Now surely they might be new to us but they have an internal meaning to these people, who are either from French speaking community or from English speaking one. It’s interesting how these employees are named according to the language that they speak at work. She said that even their language is commodified. Now the Francophone are those people who speak French as their native language and also speak English which is their second language. They do the job of receiving phone calls from various French speaking customers not just from Canada but from any other place around the globe which has business affiliates with those Canadian companies. Where as on the other hand the Anglophones are those who just speak English when at work and doing the same tasks that Francophones do. Thus, in the present case scenario where globalization has taken place in almost every developed industrialized nation, in Canada too, these Francophones have gained much more importance over the Anglophones in due course of time. In her lecture, Ms. Heller also mentioned that Canada was now looking for employees from Asian countries like India, Japan, China, Sri-Lanka and Malaysia to fill up their service sector and boost their economic transactions with customers in those Asian countries. But what do these employees get? They get nothing, except for very minimum wages, tedious working schedules and no benefits of health care and housing. This is one of the ways in which not just Canadian, but many corporations all around the globe are taking advantage of the regional language speaking population to capture market and create a stable customer link in the region to sell its services and products. Another short topic that Ms. Heller briefly touched upon was about the way that Canadian government was now turning its focus onto commodifying the various individual French-Canadian group cultures living in the remote parts of Canada’s beautiful landscape. Until recently they did not even care about these individual groups, when suddenly some private tourist companies suggested that they should open the doors for tourist activities in these regions, and to so called expose the ‘great culture’ of these groups, their art, craft and also their language, to the whole world. These private corporations are from the United States and France, who want to merge in with one of the tourist companies in Canada and open up
