Medical Research On Animals
A great amount of information that is found by animal testing is useless, a waste of money, time, and lives of innocent animals. On the other hand, research on animals is an important factor in understanding disease and developing ways to prevent it. Millions of people’s lives have been saved because of the efforts put forth in experimentation with the use of animals. Animals are sacrificing their lives for humankind, which they owe nothing. Every year about 60 to 100 million animals are used for experimental testing. Scientists use animals such as: birds, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, monkeys, and rabbits (Why Vegan 13). Scientists study the animals to get a better understanding of the body functions. Animals are also used for the development of new drugs and surgical techniques (Singer 19). Biomedical research, toxicity testing, diagnosis of disease, and product safety are also part of the big world of experimentation (Catalano 29). Scientists believe that these experiments that are pursued on animals are the main staple in progression of human medicine, health and safety. Such tests help determine if human beings might benefit from the new drugs or procedures. Although some animal testing has helped improved th
Because testing drugs on animals will have inconsistent effects on humans this to contributes to the unnecessary experiments done on animals. Thousands of Americans every year are being diagnosed with lung disease. They in which would make exquisite test subjects for an experiment that is beneficial to mankind. If we are trying to fix a problem with humans, then why would we inflict something so terrible on an animal? The results are not always as accurate in the same way using animals and humans (“Help Take a Bite Out of Cruel Experiments” 1). Although some experiments have helped mankind, many people have lost their lives due to animal experimentation. Scientists do not realize how different drugs have inconsistent effects on humans and animals. For instance in 1993, a hepatitis medication proven safe in mice, dogs, and monkeys was only proven to be harmful to humans. As a result, at least five humans died. Dr. Jay Hoofnagele stated, “Human toxicity is not predicted by animal tests.” (Thacher, Non-Animal tests” 4 ). Further examples of misleading results that were gathered by experiments performed on animals were strokes, lung cancer, and various drugs (Rogers 1). Between 1976 and 1985 more than half of all prescription drugs that were approved by the FDA later had to be removed from the market because of serious, adverse side effects (Singer 19). Therefore, many scientists believe, that such benefits gained by animal research are trivial compared to the costs in animal suffering. (“Animal Experimentation” 2). The horrifying results of the lives for these animals are unbearable. For example, Premarin is now being linked to the causes of some cases of breast cancer. How can a drug made from animal waste be of any advantage to humans? There is nothing natural about consuming pregnant horse’s urine. (“Your Health” 1). Dr. Philip Warner director of the Menopause Institute of Northern California stated, “I am not an animal-rights person. If I felt Premarin was the best product, I say take it and the hell with the horses. But it is not so; I do not prescribe it.” (“Your Health” 1). Many women are using estrogen replacement drugs. Also, many foods are estrogen rich such as citrus fruits, tofu, and different types of berries. Torun Almer of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, says, “I switched to a product called Estinyl and believe it is a far superior product than Premarin. I no longer have a consistent bloated feeling and I have dropped the 10 pounds I gained when I started taking Premarin.” (“Your Health” 1). Physicians are prescribing nothing more than a high fiber low-fat diet to relieve the symptoms of menopause (
