The Pros and Cons of Watching TV

When Baird invented the television it is unlikely that he had imagined the scope of its use. In this new age of science and technology, television has proved to be the most important and cherished medium for entertainment and information exchange. The radio had and still has its following but it can in no way compare with the near mass-hysteria with which television is greeted. Television has gained such heights of popularity that for a very large number of people it has become an essential part of their lives.
Television is popular among people of various age groups. This also includes children, who are perhaps the main prospects of television. The children are the ones who are much more exposed to television, because they take birth in this world, where television is a common household commodity. Thus, inevitably the television has and is influencing the children. The effect of television on children can be broadly categorized into mainly two: a positive effect and a negative one. The television has a lot of advantages and thus, it has been successful in casting its positive influence on the children. The television has almost unlimited values as a medium of mass education. Thus, children can gain a lot of knowledge just by watching TV. The various programs broadcasted by the television can really help in the intellectual development of a child. Television gives a lot of information about things ranging from animal life, cultures, science and technology and as a whole, of our world and our lives.
Thus, we can say that the children who watch television can grow more quickly intellectually than those who cannot get access to television. Even large numbers of schools and colleges have adopted what has commonly come to be known as 'audio-visual' means of teaching. This is because the children can get a more lasting impression on the subject matter and things will be much more easier if they get to watch it on the television unlike reading.
