Nirvana-Annotated Bibliography

Azerrad, Michael. Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana. New York: Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, 1994.

This book is ideal for any Nirvana fan. It follows the group from the beginning until a year before the tragic death of a Kurt Cobaine. Later, a final chapter was added to include the last year culminating to Cobaine’s death. What sets this book apart from typical Nirvana books is the fact that it was written before Cobaine committed suicide. Thus, this eliminates any of the “lets feel sorry about Cobaine” attitude, and focuses on their actual careers as musicians and the music they made. Azerrad analyzes every song on the group’s three major albums, and provides insight into everything by sharing exclusive interviews with members of the band Cobaine, Chris Novoselic, and Dave Grohl. In addition, there are interviews with family, friends, relatives, former bandmates and associates of the group. The book not only perfectly tells the story of Nirvana, but also includes a complete discography, and over one hundred rare photographs, posters and original lyric sheets.

Editors of the Rolling Stone. Cobain. New York: Rolling Stone Press, 1994.

This article focuses on the cause of Kurt Cobain’s death. It also talks about reasons for the popularity of the group. British journalist Christopher Sandford, who wrote a biography titled Kurt Cobain, brings up many things about Cobain’s depression. The article mentions how Cobain is somewhat inaccurately portrayed through this book. The article goes on to tell readers about how Nirvana became established. It also analyzes some lyrics from Nirvana’s songs. Later, it further explains depression as Cobain’s way of life, and hypothesizes that even if Cobain was still alive, Nirvana would not have lasted. Toward the end of his life, Cobain himself was growing tired of his music and of the industry in general. Fans and critics may also have become bored of Cobain’s “I-hate-everything” attitude. This article comes down hard on Cobain when speaking of Sanford’s opinions. For example, he even called Cobaine homosexual because he only slept with two women on his tours. Although these accusations may be shocking, this piece on Cobain is slightly informative.
