Nirvana-Annotated Bibliography

Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana. New York: Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, 1994.
This book is ideal for any Nirvana fan. It follows the group from the beginning until a year before the tragic death of a Kurt Cobaine. Later, a final chapter was added to include the last year culminating to Cobaine's death. What sets this book apart from typical Nirvana books is the fact that it was written before Cobaine committed suicide. Thus, this eliminates any of the "lets feel sorry about Cobaine" attitude, and focuses on their actual careers as musicians and the music they made. Azerrad analyzes every song on the group's three major albums, and provides insight into everything by sharing exclusive interviews with members of the band Cobaine, Chris Novoselic, and Dave Grohl. In addition, there are interviews with family, friends, relatives, former bandmates and associates of the group. The book not only perfectly tells the story of Nirvana, but also includes a complete discography, and over one hundred rare photographs, posters and original lyric sheets.
Arnold, Gina. Route 666: On the Route to Nirvana. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1993.
Gina Arnold's book highlights a fifteen-year period, beginning with the Sex Pistols and ending with Nirvana. She presents the story of punk-rock in the United States that spanned the period that she grew up in. This book is unique in that not too many other writers have written extensively on rock music and were able to cover so much. She talks about rock music through her own experiences and through the testimony of two other people. All of them collected their information through personal experiences and after talking with record store owners, college radio deejays, and fans all over the country. Arnold tends to get more rapped up in her own experience being at a concert or meeting artists, and the emotions she is feeling rather than the actual information.
