Pg. 8 Are there any drawbacks to server farms? Pg. 8 Are there any drawbacks to server farms? Pg. 8-9 In this modern world there is an emerging technology whose time has come. Current server operating systems do not properly address the issue of interference between competing applications. This deficiency is a major roadblock for Internet and Application Service Providers whose major clients are large organizations in the public and private sector, that need high levels of processing power, and want smooth running well-distributed server resources, combined with their other customer, the basic internet user who only cares that the service is there. Large corporations with their own ne
Clustering is used to enhance system scalability and availability. It is used to assure that there will be an uninterrupted access to stored data or to applications, regardless of numbers of users or size of memory needed to run an application. It tracks demands for processing power from different machines, prioritizes the tasks, and schedules and reschedules them. 1“Users submit jobs to the load-sharing software, rather than to individual systems, and indicate the priority of the job. The software matches the job to the servers or workstations most capable of handling it and schedules the job for execution. Server farms are able to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, utilizing” processing power that would otherwise sit idle. Server clusters protect against hardware failures, failures of all operating systems, device drivers or application software. Server clusters allow operating system and application software to be upgraded across the cluster without having to take down the application. These clusters also create a redundant backup for all data in the event of failure. All these benefits are accomplished through the use of load balancing which will be explained later. The main drawbacks to server farming are twofold. First is the energy consumption. Incredible amounts of energy are consumed to feed the new server farms which are football sized buildings loaded with servers. Each server needs energy two live. Now here’s the second and most problematic drawback. All the power being generated by these machines is transformed into heat as electricity always does. So now you have to use even more energy to cool the buildings down so that the servers don’t meltdown. 6“About half the total power is used to generate heat (that is, to perform computation) and the other half is used to remove the heat”.
