The Woman's Role In The Church

This passage is on of the most controversial passage from the Scriptures because it talks about the woman’s role in the Church. There are two proposed solutions: some consider that woman has the right to exercise teaching and preaching in the Church while others totally disagree with this view.

The Egalitarian view says that men and women should be regarded as equals in authority in the home and given equal access to all positions of leadership in the church. The egalitarians claim that the verses in 1 Timothy that says that women cannot be teachers in the church really meant that this was because the women there in Ephesius all happened to be unlearned and ignorant women. The problem was not their gender, it was their lack of education. Now that women are permitted to graduate from seminary, they can become pastors since they are not unlearned anymore.

A common explanation runs along the lines of women cannot have authority because of Eve's mistake. God punished Adam and Eve, and one way of punishing humanity for what they did was to set up male dominance along with slavery to sin. As Christ sets us free fro

The Jewish women were not as restricted in public appearance as Greek women but did not have the freedom of first-century Roman women (Ferguson, 58). The Jewish woman was the mistress of the home, but was not qualified to appear as a witness in court and was exempt from fulfilling religious duties that had to be performed at stated times (because her first duties were to her children and the home and she might not be in the required state of ritual purity). Household duties included grinding flour, cooking, laundry, making bed, and spinning wool. She was supposed to maintain an attractive appearance for her husband. The husband was required to provide her with food and clothing, maintain regular sexual relations (cf. I Cor. 7:5).

For a church once concerned to be seen as supportive of what was good for society, the only solution was to conform church order to that of the well-ordered house hold (hence 3:4-5, 12) and to forbid wives to teach (didasko} or to have authority (authenteo; the meaning could be stronger: “domineer”) over their husbands (Dunn, 236).

God has laid down certain guidelines in His Word that govern the use of gifts and talents and the roles of men and women in the church and home. After all, the Author and Giver of the gifts certainly should know the best way those gifts should be used and be able to order the way in which they are to be used.
