Milestones

Sibling rivalry is a common concept in the modern family. The older brother torments the little brother as he completely idolizes him. The older sister makes a guinea pig of the younger in her first maternal attempts. Well, such was the routine in my house. I felt as though my though my older siblings got with everything and I was like the neighbor kid who just wouldn't leave no matter how many subtle hints were dropped. No matter how much my mother reassured me in the opposite, it was set in my mind.
I first noticed this on my first day of kindergarten. My parents had gone all out complete with a restaurant breakfast prior to the big event and a snappy new outfit for the day. I was surprised a parade hadn't come by. On mine I was given an apple lollypop so I think things were even. I remember my mother telling me that she would make up for it another time, a phrase I knew all too well.
Fast forward about seven years and I find myself picking out what I want to wear for my first day of 7th grade, something I had never thought of or cared about before. I learned this from my brother who received top of the line everything for his first day and I got a last-minute run to Mervyn's. I was told things would even out later on, that they didn't have the money for flashy stuff yet and that it would me made up for at another time.
"So how does it feel," queried my brother" to be in the big leagues?" Taken aback, I didn't answer right away. My brother had just broken his record for most words said to me ever. He surprised me on my first day of high school and took me to get donuts and coffee and he actually paid. I just told him I was nervous and hoped he didn't completely blow me off. He assured me he would and we set out for the school. Upon hearing this, my mother acted as though he was a saint for doing this, which he may as well been.
And now I find myself in the present day writing an essay that basically sounds like me complaining about my family life growing up.
