Obese

Living in the United States has increased the risks for any individual of being overweight. “ Obesity is a chronic illness that can be defined as an increase in body weight beyond the limitation of skeletal and physical requirement, as the result of an excessive accumulation of fat in the body” (Rolfes,Whitney,2002).

There are more than 80% of individuals in the United States who are obese. The numbers are increasing each day because more and more people are not educated on this topic. Parents need to be educated on the risks of obesity because children are highly susceptible to adult onset diabetes. The society we live in needs to be educated on this topic because we tend to accept eating in larger quantities, double sizing from fast food chains and eating whatever we want. In reality we just need to take the time and go back to the food pyramid we were once taught. This paper will highlight the important factors of being obese and what is involved from how we cope with this disease.

Obesity can be treated with medications, surgery, supplements, fasting and education. Obesity can be treated if you are willing to be treated. Living with emotional and psychosocial aspects will

The first step of coping with obesity is acknowledging the problem. From what I have read most people will not admit to being obese, they simply are in a state of denial. This is when people just start coping with it. Meaning they ignore the problem try not to think about it. Which of course has physical and mental effects on the person. Obese people put them self in such a trance they can’t even recognize the problem. Simply because they don’t know. After you have identified the problem the second step would be trying to solve the problem itself. I learned there are many techniques used. From basic’s to medications all the way up to surgery. Only the extremely obese qualifies for surgery. The basic technique for obesity is behavior modification. Which the hardest technique to cope with because it’s a total life change, but needed. I will admit I am still having problems with this one. There area’s in which I lack strength like not eating before you go to bed at night. Its a bad habit to have but I am working on changing it. These changes in habits are (a weight-loss [low-calorie] diet and exercise) are as important in keeping weight off as they are in losing weight. Counseling or support groups are an important part of successfully making these lifestyle changes. “Doctors recommend that depression or a bone or joint (orthopedic) problem that limits a person's ability to exercise be treated before starting a weight-loss program. People with untreated depression often have a difficult time staying on a weight-loss program. If a person is unable to do at least mild exercise, he or she will have difficulty losing weight” (Webmd). Medications are another technique used in coping with obesity. I read there are two types of medications over the counter and prescription. These medications should only be used in conjunction with weight loss and exercise program for them to be fully effective. Prescription medication is only for those who have a BMI of 30 or more and need to lose this weight due to a serious medical illness. I also found out that these prescriptions are only for short term use.

I feel the quality of our lives will play an important factor in obesity because obesity is one of the largest causes of death besides cancer and heart disease. Just knowing this can be very scary, but this is why it is so important to be educated on this topic. Education is important because of what risks are involved. “Children are being diagnosed with adult onset diabetes, also known as type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the more common type of diabetes in which fat cells resist insulin therefore know as noninsulin-depentdent” (Rolfes,Whitney,2002). Young adults are shortening their lives each day by not being treated and the numbers of this illness are rising each day.

The most dangerous way I found to cope with obesity is surgery. Surgery was the only method I have not tired until recently. I found this was the final and only step left for me to take. I feel surgery can help those who are severely obese cope with obesity. Thus meeting arrangement of qualifications and must under go intensive testing. First one must have a BMI of 40 + be obese for 5 or more years and do not abuse alcohol, must not have emotional problems and at least has to be 18 ye
