Symbolism in The Rime of Ancient Mariner"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, contains themes and ideas on sin, love, harmony and the "one life,"" that Coleridge suggests. The use of symbolism of the albatross and the act of killing it, displays man's harmful and clever actions. The intention to change the mindset of man is difficult because human beings are often stubborn and unmovable. Yet, with the spectrum of tools Coleridge utilizes to provoke emotional responses from the reader, we can see a clearer picture of how we've changed and the constant need we have to connect with nature. At length did cross an Albatross, Thorough the fog it came; As if it had been a Christian soul, We hailed it in God's name. It ate the food it ne'er had eat, And round and round it flew. The ice did split with a thunder-fit; The helmsman steered us through! And a good south wind sprung up behind; The Albatross did follow, And every day, for food or play, Came to the mariner's hollo! In mist or cloud, on mast or shrou |

Drugs - Causing Bodily HarmThe film, "The Meth Epidemic", examines the spread of methadone and its devastating consequences. Statistics link meth users to a variety of meth related crimes and there are an estimated 1.5 million meth addicts in the United States. More than 35 states have passed legislation to restrict sales of products containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. Limits have been set on the amount of these drugs that may be purchased, and now, customer are required to request the item from behind the counter, from a locked case, or by requiring them to sign a registry. Some states have been even more aggressive. Oregon, for example, requires that purchasers of products containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine obtain a prescription from their doctor. Over the years, at the federal level, the government has implemented increasing restrictions on the sale of products containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. It has also passed legislation to increase sentences for meth traffickers and to fund local pol |

Green Practices at the Nasvhille ZooThe Nashville Zoo spans roughly 200 acres, six miles from the heart of downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The zoo serves as a significant part of Tennessee's cultural landscape and attracts people of all ages. Also referred to as Grassmere Park, the Nashville Zoo's mission statement is, "Promoting environmental and species conservation through education and recreation."" By incorporating the practice of sustainability at Grassmere, the Nashville Zoo could serve as a beacon for Tennessee, leading the way toward incorporating sustainable practices into the mainstream. The zoo could benefit from utilizing these applications, not only by supporting the environment, but by improving the bottom line through proper land management. To state the obvious, manure is abundant at all zoos. However, while it may have an unpleasant smell, this natural animal function can be used to nourish a wide diversity of soil organisms. Instead of filling up landfill space and increasing emissions, animal droppin |

The Global Operations of Apple, Inc.Apple has an amazingly effective global strategy - consider the world as one market. A good example of this is the iPod, which is the exact same everywhere. Like many companies around the world, Apple has the task of answering what decisions will be made locally or globally and which products will be tested in a particular market or rolled out to others. As in any marketing strategy, global marketing has advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage of a global strategy is that it enables a company to leverage economies of scale. When it sells the same product worldwide, it can buy raw manufacturing materials in bulk, potentially saving the company millions of dollars per year. Economies of scale can save companies money in labor, packaging, and marketing material costs, as well. Apple uses efficiency to its advantage when making its products universal; this helps to lower overall costs. Apple strategically deals hard with contractors used to manufacture its products in order t |

Professional Interview - Pediatric OncologyPediatric Oncology is the study and treatment of cancer in children. For my interview, I choose one of the most respected men in the field; Dr. Richard Ho, the Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Ho has been working at Vanderbilt for several years and is considered one of the most reliable and hard working specialists on the Vanderbilt staff. In addition, he was my pediatric doctor (until I turned eighteen), so I was very comfortable asking him to take some time out of his day for an interview. He was very welcoming, and was not hesitant about any of the questions I asked. On a weekend home from college, I was able to go to Nashville for the day and pay Dr. Ho a visit. On my walk to his office, I saw changes that were being made to the hospital - more bright and pleasant colors on the wall, and a lot more smiling faces. It was a very upbeat day at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. As I knocked on Dr. Ho's office door, he cam |

Media's Influence on DemocracyDemocracy in the United States is at risk and William Greider, author of "Who Will Tell the People?" would likely agree. In his book, Greider stated, "American Democracy is in trouble, more trouble than most people realize," and it's true that major challenges to democratic system of government lie ahead. The rise of a divisive mainstream media, the slow degradation of constitutional rights, and the reduced separation of branch powers are compounded by the shrugs of apathetic youth - and in all likelihood, will result in a long-term collapse of individual liberty, economic well-being and societal prosperity. Media Division While it may not be the only source of national youth apathy, the modern mainstream media is definitely an amplifying factor. Bombarded by worthless news articles, trivial celebrity gossip and reality TV, many of today's youth care little to nothing about politics and world events. A majority of those that do are condemned as either 'radicals' or 'fringe groups' by the very media their peers worship. This duplicitous relationship between worthless information being prom |

Natural Energy Resources in TurkeyThe importance of securing natural energy resources is taking center stage in the European Union's (EU) future plans. Turkey, a candidate for a full membership to EU, is located close to 70% of the world's oil and gas reserves. Due to it's proximity to these important resources, Turkey is in a perfect position to host a large pipeline (Nabucco Gas Pipeline) that will carry gas from the Caspian Sea to the Middle East. This would give all the countries involved a necessary alternative to the Russian supply routes - and it would become the fourth most dynamic energy corridor for Europe. Clearly, the project is aimed at loosening Russia's dominating grip on oil and gas. The pipeline would be a positive statement of EU-Turkish relations, and it would be of mutual benefit; providing the EU with a reliable supply route for energy while allowing Turkey to bank transit fees in order to bolster their economy. More importantly, Turkey would prove to be an indispensable partner and a deserving c |

Avoiding the Diabetic StageIntroduction There are three types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational. Type 1 Diabetes is diagnosed in children and adults and it prevents the body from producing insulin. Gestational Diabetes is developed only in pregnant women and it is usually discovered in the 24th week of the pregnancy. Gestational Diabetes doesn't indicate that the woman or her unborn child will have a life-long battle with diabetes, but it does mean that they must be careful to control their blood sugar through the remainder of their pregnancy. Type 2 Diabetes, the most common,, causes a person's sugar levels to run too high. A person with Type 2 Diabetes who doesn't take insulin injections will eventually become "insulin resistant". The human body requires insulin in order for the body to use glucose for energy. Maintaining a healthy diet, and eating regularly will help the body break all the sugars as well as starches into glucose than from there insulin takes the sugar from the blood and takes it to the cell which prevents us from getting Type 2 Diabetes. Well if the glucose was built in |

Political Participation in Latin AmericaThe post independence period in Latin American represents the golden age of the caudillos (military leader). The time was thick with political instability and the chaos of the period created confused and disjointed political campaigns. The most successful caudillos had alliances with a number of popular groups and depending on the nation they were either Indian, Black, mestizo, or a combination thereof. These caudillos often mobilized followers with various methods and used a number different strategies to create new forms of political participation in Latin America during this era. Juan Manuel Rosas best epitomizes the caudillo in this traditional system. Rosas comes out of the province of Buenos Aires and was raised in the rural countryside from a working class family of cattle ranchers. Rosas kept his power through a mix of personality, popular religion, patriotic fervor, and fear/terror. Rosas had a lot of ways to mobilize and solidify widespread support for his policies. One way was to dispense "vast expanses of public lands " to those who supporte |

Arming School Personnel with GunsColumbine High School, Virginia Technical College and Sandy Hook Elementary School – the names of these schools will forever be etched into the memory of this country. A total of seventy-two lives combined, were taken during three of the deadliest shootings in American history. The most recent school shooting, Sandy Hook Elementary School, has sparked an urgent conversation about school safety - should teachers and school personnel be armed, should all schools have a police officer on the premises throughout the entire school day? Protecting our children while their at school has quickly returned to national spotlight (Blake). Those who support arming school staff members, argue that doing so would deter violence. They believe that if a perpetrator knows that adults at a school are armed, would cause him to think twice before attacking a classroom of children. On the other hand, those who oppose arming teachers and school employees believe that doing this will send the wrong message to students. Having teachers with guns in the school leads the students to believe violence is the way to handle their |

The Science of Falling in LoveFalling in love is one of the most complex and overwhelming feelings a human being can experience. The dynamics of "being in love" are complex and multifaceted. While a full review of the nuances of such pairings is beyond the scope of this paper, my purpose here is to highlight some of the basic processes and communication behaviors relevant to falling in love, dating and romantic relationships. (Samp, J., & Palevitz, C, 2009) It is common to try to organize various psychological topics by placing the factors involved into environmental and physiological categories. For example, you would place hormones, a known component of physical and sexual attraction, into the physiological category. However, "where would you place something like desire for physical pleasure, a frequently cited element in sexual motivation? " (Abramson & Pinkerton, 1995; Cofer, 1972; Hatfield & Rapson, 1993). Falling in love has both a physiological component - the physical sensations associated with touch - |

Homecoming by Bruce Dawe"Homecoming", by Bruce Dawe, illustrates and recounts the tragedies of the Vietnam War in an even-tempered, but negative tone. The poem is based around the literal returning of passed soldiers in the sense that they were not appreciated. Dawe utilizes a variety of imagery and literary techniques to further emphasize the deeper significance while attempting to convey the message that war is unavailing and effectively a waste of human life. "Homecoming" makes use of enjambment throughout, more so in the second half, where the majority of the imagery is presented as well as the first mention of a feeling 'sorrowful'. There is no specific structure maintained across the whole of the text, which allows for a more particular writing style unique to the poet. Due to the relatively cynical tone the poem reads at a steady pace averting the possibility of heedlessly skipping through. The foremost section of the poem introduces the seemingly routine task of transporting dead bodies as if it wer |

The Role of Financial ManagersCorporate finance can be defined as the science of managing money in a business environment. Another accurate definition is corporate finance involves six basic related functions: financing, capitol budgeting, a capital structure decision, financial management, corporate governance function, and risk- management. Corporations raise capital by selling debt which are bonds and notes, and equity which is stock claims against themselves - either directly to investors or indirectly to financial intermediaries, such as commercial banks. Financial managers distribute these funds to the most attractive investment opportunities. The same finance professionals also manage the firm's cash flows to ensure financial solvency and to minimize the resources needed to support a given level of corporate activity. Finally, financial managers must monitor and control all aspects of the firms risk in order to maintain a balance of risk and return that is consistent with share-price maximization. Busin |

Health Care: Right or Privilege?HEALTHCARE DEFINED The definition of "healthcare", according to Webster's Dictionary, is "The prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of mental and physical well-being through the services offered by the medical and allied health professions" (2013). COVERAGE: A RIGHT OR A PRIVILEGE In the United States, those who make a good salary, can get top-notch care; but the lower class doesn't have access to this type of care. The report, "Care Without Coverage: Too Little, Too Late," examines the dilemma of 30 million people and revealed one in seven working-age American employers do not provide insurance and those employee's do not qualify for government medical care (Sternberg, 2002). Additionally, companies that formerly offered healthcare and insurance benefits have fallen victim to rising costs in our economy and forced to cut back and/or terminate coverage to employees. What does it translate to? THE UNINSURED The uninsured die earlier on |

The Prevention of Pressure UlcersThe prevention of pressure ulcers is an ongoing medical challenge (Aug, 2011). Despite a general consensus that pressure ulcers are largely preventable, they continue to be a problematic and persisting health concern (Australian Wound Management Association, 2012). For many years, repositioning has been paramount to the prevention of pressure ulcers, and much research has been conducted to confirm this practice. Repositioning is a powerful, yet practical, preventative measure that is within the control and domain of all healthcare professionals (Moore & Van Etten, 2011) and this essay aims to explore the various approaches to repositioning and their efficacy in the prevention of pressure ulcers. A pressure ulcer can be defined as localized injury to the skin, underlying tissue or both, that commonly occurs over a bony prominence, caused by pressure and often combined with friction and shear. A number of contributing factors are also associated with pressure ulcers, including hemodynam |

The Consequences of Being Unprepared for WarAt the beginning of the First World War, popular opinion was that it would not last more than four months. It was also believed that the science of modern warfare would be so deadly that mankind would demand cessation of such barbarism. The failure to anticipate the severity of war, and to be unprepared for the unexpected, lead both sides of the war to experience high casualties and deaths from the years of trench warfare. Germany's lack of planning resulted in the failure to completely execute the Schlieffen Plan. And because Britain was unprepared, they were unable to win the Battle of Somme. The Schlieffen Plan originated from Kaiser Wilhelm's desire to be able to fight a war on two fronts against France and Russia simultaneously. The idea of the plan was to cause the fall of France in approximately 39 days. The plan called for the German army to skirt the cities and to surround Paris and ultimately capture the French army, which in turn would cause them to surrender. That was o |

Review - Westmont Orchestra PerformanceIn the Fall of 2009, the Westmont Orchestra performed at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. The performance can be viewed on "YouTube" as a pre-recorded video uploaded on January 8th of 2010. The conductor of the performance and orchestra was Michael Shasberger. The first performance was "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," composed by Bach. No choristers sang the songs lyrics but instead, only instruments played this short piece. This piece is a hymn that is usually played as piano, but was dominantly violins and flutes in this performance by the orchestra. It was a slow and peaceful tempo, which was rather relaxing. After the beginning piece, the conductor then introduces his orchestra and then proceeds to conduct as the orchestra begins playing "Overture to Die Fledermaus," composed by Strauss. All sixty of the performers were involved in this piece. This movement is rather uplifting, and is calming to listen to. The piece begins with two flutes playing back and forth, one note to another. The Scholarly Mind of Wolfgang KohlerWolfgang Kohler was born in Reval, Estonia in 1887. His parents were of German decent, and shortly after he was born, the Kohler family moved to Wolfenbuttell, Germany. The importance of a good education was introduced to Kohler early in life, for his father was a schoolmaster, his sisters were nurses and educators, and Wilhelm, his older brother, was a scholar. As a child, Kohler loved being outdoors and the beauty of classical music (Dahl, 2005). He even learned how to play the piano. As a collegiate, he attended universities such as Tubingen from 1905 to 1906, Bonn from 1906 to 1907, and Berlin from 1907 to 1909. While earning his Ph.D in Berlin, Kohler studied physics under Max Planck and psychology under Karl Stumpf. His dissertation was written on psycho-acoustics and physics - music obviously playing a large role in Kohlers life. Kohler got married in his mid-twenties as it was custom to do, and he and his wife had four children together. Although not much information is found |

Disease Control and West Nile VirusRecognized as the infamous silent disease, West Nile Virus (WNV) is depicted in the news to be a fatal disease triggering a nationwide frenzy. The virus is kept alive in the wild by being transferred from bird to mosquito, and back to bird. WNV is an arbovirus that causes encephalitis "brain swelling" (CDC 2006) According to the CDC, less than one percent of individuals infected will never exhibit symptoms. Among those that have severe illness because of the virus the death rate by case ranges between three to fifteen percent with the highest fatality rate being seen among the elderly community. (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/westnile/qa/cases.htm) Discovered in New York City in 1999, the virus has since spread across the continental US. Louisiana residents have reported infections of this virus since 2001; the record outbreak year was 2002, when Louisiana reported three hundred and twenty-eight cases with twenty-four fatalities. Just last year, the state reported one hundred a |

AP Literature - Personal StatementIn the words of a Swedish Proverb, "In a good book, the best is between the lines." In my opinion, this quote embodies the true value of literature. I believe that good English literature holds an empowering energy; it has the capability not only to amuse, but to provoke readers to obtain a deeper comprehension of the world. The most recent novel to arouse my feeling of this sort is F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby." The complicated web of topics and motives pursue me to question the nature of individual connections and to truly utilize my analytical skills. The speech element of the novel I am currently analyzing has allowed me to develop an interest in the technical aspect of writing, which has piqued my interest towards literature. The topic of literature touches me on a personal level; often there are no firm limitations of what can or cannot be correct. And thus, puts forth a |

Fighting the Caffeine AddictionCollege students do not exactly have a "normal" schedule, and sometimes they need a little something extra to keep going. Students run from class to jobs and extracurricular activities with rarely any time at all in between, and even then, they manage to stay out until the middle of the night. Most students, if not all, resort to caffeinated beverages such as coffee, energy drinks, and sodas for a quick burst of energy. But, caffeine causes an instant rush of adrenaline which causes people to be more alert, focused, and energized. Unfortunately, these energizing drinks are not always beneficial. Many students have reported stomach issues and sudden energy crashes as a result of caffeine addiction. Anxiety, stomach ulcers, and depression are just a few of the several long and short term problems caused by these drinks. Many students do not know of the dangers of the caffeinated beverages that they consume on a daily basis. Caffeine, like nicotine found in cigarettes, is a highly addi |

Theories on Domestic ViolenceThere are many theories on the root causes of domestic violence. The social learning theory states that people learn from their environment, and this explains, in part, why children who witness abuse often grow up with the tendency to continue patterns of abuse. The feminist (patriarchal) theory is when the male in a relationship uses violence and intimidation to destroy a woman's self-esteem in an attempt to take control of her. The modeling theory is a psychological theory where studies believe that domestic violence results from anti-social personality, a psychological disorder or problem such as low-self-esteem, post-traumatic stress or a person need to be in control. When evaluating theories, it's difficult to prove - or disapprove - the reliability and relevance. How does one define domestic violence many people believe it is the abuse that woman suffer from the hands of a spouse. The definition of domestic violence is defined as "Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behav |

Beowulf and Sir Gawain"Beowulf" and "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", are both complex in thematic content and structure. They're both subject to various interpretations, symbolically and thematically. Moreover, there are several recurring instances of a similar theme that can be found throughout the quests and characters in both stories: heroism. "Beowulf" is the story of a hero who is, "A protector of his people, pledged to uphold truth, justice, and to respect tradition" (Beowulf). This quote defines Beowulf as the type of hero that society wants him to be. Beowulf's first conflict on his journey is to fight a beast that has been killing strong honorable soldiers for such a long time. Not only would he defeat it, but he would do it with no weapons or armor. Beowulf soon confronts Grendel as planned and using his bare hands, defeats the beast, taking his arm for a trophy. Finally ridding the great Danes king of this problem his actions impose a new problem on them. Now Gre |

Gender and the Roman Catholic ChurchThis research paper critically analyses the controversies surrounding the politics of power in gender relations within the Roman Catholic Church. Historically, the unequal power structure between the different genders (male and female) in the Hebrew Bible relegated women and placed them in positions of objective powerlessness. And despite God's plan for equality between men and women through Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:28) and the fight for women's emancipation by various advocacy groups and individuals, which has led to a huge progress in the liberation of women in the religious, cultural, political and socio-economic spheres. The Roman Catholic Church has refused to move with the shift. Instead, it continues to uphold its conservative beliefs in the traditions of men that oppress and discriminate against women in the Church. Thus, women in the Roman Catholic Church are denied positions of religious authority which excludes them from clerical positions in the church. Elizabeth Cady S |
