Critical Analysis of The Viable Human Thomas Berry constructed a solid argument for the support of the idea of Deep Ecology. Comical in style and language, the message that Catch-22 introduces to its reader is one of a grim world's decay. Heller's fictional story portrays absurd characters and situations, but the underlying theme of human decadence is clearly visible, especially in the last portion of the book. Heller's attitude towards his characters also gives way to an overwhelming tone of pity and sorrow for the world and its population. The overall theme of the novel depicts a decline in individuality, decay of human moral, and a certain loss of awareness of both surrounding events and personal action. The wart...

The post-apocalyptic setting has become one of the most prevalent settings in modern film making and literature. The extreme situations strip the human race of morals and beliefs. The civilization of the world is reduced to an animalistic survival scenario. These worlds offer an ideal stage for a commentary on human nature. Cormac McCarthy uses a post-apocalyptic story of a man and his son in his novel The Road to do just this. The world is depicted as a cold, desolate waste land blanketed in ash. Cannibalistic groups of humans travel in packs hunting everyone they find. One may find it hard t...

Today, a reader might find it hard to imagine how daring Nora Helmer was a hundred years ago. The theme of women's liberation makes this story seem almost contemporary. It was unthinkable that a woman could leave her husband to obtain freedom. Henrik Ibsen shows us the story of a woman recapturing her strength and self-confidence. Nora begins a very hard and difficult search for...
