Followed by the revolutionary war in which America fought and won its independence from England to form its own nation. America is a warring country just like any other great nation. It is because of the wars that were fought and won which created the rights and liberties of today by which our country is founded upon. Because of our nation's freedoms, anarchists such as Emma Goldman are able to speak out their opinions, write and publish pieces such as "Patriotism: A Menace to Liberty". The army Goldman verbally assaults is the same one which fought for and gained the constitutional rights that she uses to help preach her radical ideas.
Goldman describes how nations around the world were spending too much money on building the size of their military forces. Goldman a known anarchist who was involved in fighting America's march toward war states, "The irresistible conclusion from available data is that the increase of expenditure for army and navy purposes is rapidly surpassing the growth of population in each of the countries considered" (179). She goes on to say "a continuation of the increased demands of militarism threatens each of those nations with a progressive exhaustion both of men and resources" (179). The nations Goldman was writing about were Great Britain, United States, France, Japan, Germany, Russia and Italy. The nations mentioned above were preparing to fight World War I, which was considered by many the war to end all wars. Therefore the building of militaries was for protection and necessity.
Goldman believed that a social and economical changed needed to take place in the United Sates as well as in other countries of the world. In regard to having a standing army, Goldman writes, "Every intelligent man and woman knows, however, that this is a myth maintained to frighten and coerce the foolish" (179). Goldman believes that having a standing army is unnecessary similar to how she believes spending money to maintain and further develop the military was, and is unnecessary.
