Seatbelt Use

Many people do not realize the effects of wearing a seatbelt in an automobile. The safety precautions of wearing a seatbelt can save a life and, in less deadly accidents, help prevent injuries. However, sometimes seatbelts can cause the injury depending on the motor mishap. Since no one is able to predict when an accident will occur, taking the preventative measures of wearing a seatbelt can save a life and lessen injuries on a person. .
Often, motor vehicle accidents result in death. Failure to wear the seatbelt contributes to more fatalities than any other behavior. During an automobile crash, the seatbelt keeps your head and chest from striking the steering wheel, dashboard, and windshield. Seatbelts provide the greatest protection from ejection. By not wearing a seatbelt, a person can be thrown from the vehicle through the windshield or door. Three quarters of the people who are ejected from cars are killed. Although the seatbelt is not guaranteed to save a life, the chance of saving a life is greater than without wearing the seatbelt. However, wearing a seatbelt could not only save lives, but it could cause fewer injuries.
While seatbelts do occasionally contribute to serious injury or death, wearing a seatbelt significantly increases the chance of survival. For every one person killed in an automobile accident, nineteen are hospitalized and three hundred require medical attention. Without a seatbelt protecting the body, more harm could occur. The seatbelt restrains the body from continuing in motion at the vehicle's original speed before the crash. By the body staying in motion without a seatbelt, head and upper body injuries can occur. Seatbelts hold a person in their seat from crashing into interior objects of the vehicle.
While many believe wearing a seatbelt can only help a person, in many circumstances the belt can damage and harm the person. Many times, the effect of wearing a seatbelt can injure someone while in an automobile accident.
