Deserving of Recognition

There are many people in the world today that deserve recognition for finding cures for different things, mend and women fighting on the front line at a time of war, and people donating money they have saved for years to help save a church. As Pete Hamill wrote in "news is a verb," "There is seldom any attention paid to scientist, poets, educators, or Archaeologists, (192). There is a serious problem in the American culture due to the excessive attention the media devotes to the lives and opinions of celebrities, we forget who the real hero's are in the world.
Today's stars are printed al over the magazines. Hamill wrote, "Any visit to the newsstand will illustrate the most wide spread phenomenon of the times: The Print Media are runny with the virus of celebrities (192)." It seems like no matter when you go look for some sort of print media all you see is famous actors/actresses, musicians, athletes, and models on the cover. Why should they be the only important people and be allowed to be on the cover of a magazine. There are people all over the world that deserve to be put on the front cover of a magazine. For example, in an article in the National Examiner, " Man, 89, donates $75,000 to church in coins. Melvin Doyle has been saving coins since he was the age of five. Doyle's wife Marge told him, "If you die before me, I"m putting all those coins in your casket with you." I don't want some body braking in the house for them." Doyle being a loyal parishineer of the church decided to donate his coins to help with the $ 5 million expansion and remodeling project for St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Now that is someone who should be put on the cover because of his contribution, not because he is famous. If Doyle was famous the print media would of rushed to his door, just so they could be the first to publish his picture and contribution. Doyle may have been printed inside of the magazine, but with such a large contribution like he made he deserved to make the cover.
