What is the value of Philosphy

What is the value of philosophy? Many different people and philosophers could tell you many different ideas and beliefs of what it is, but after reading Bertrand Russell I have understood what the real value of philosophy is. Before I read this selection by Russell I went to the beginning of the section. It said "beliefs cannot be handed down. Knowledge can perhaps be handed down. Wisdom can never be handed down. The goal of philosophy is wisdom. Trying to hand down philosophy is unphilosophical." That is a powerful statement in my mind. Philosophy doesn't try to do anything but pass on wisdom. You can't pass wisdom on as the quote says so you must learn wisdom by the dissection of philosophy. After reading the selection by Russell, it all made sense to me.
In my opinion if we are to learn anything at all about philosophy, we must engulf ourselves with as much philosophy as we can. Russell says that "the value of philosophy must be primarily sought". We can not learn anything or form beliefs if we don't read it, write it and study it. It simply cannot be done. You can not hand down philosophy. It is up to us as students to want to feed our minds with new and exciting ideas and help strengthen our ideas and beliefs along the way. .
I liked it when Russell talked about how philosophy is the basis for most of the scientific studies that we learn about today. He says if you ask a mathematician, a mineralogist, a historian, or any other man of learning, what definite body of truths has been ascertained by his science, his answer will last as long as you will listen, but if you put the same question to a philosopher, he will say he has not received positive results in his studies. This is due to the fact that as soon as definite knowledge concerning a subject becomes possible, it ceases to be called philosophy anymore and becomes a separate science. He then goes on to list various subjects and ties them back into philosophy.
