In today's world where a man will turn to violence before anything to get away from some problems raises a unique question. To what extent will one take their violent fantasies so they can be happy? In the movie "Fight Club", these childhood-like fantasies are played out. The way the director uses violence as an escape for Jack is brilliant, yet disturbing. This puts a great emphasis on today's society by showing how one will result to violence before thinking of other alternatives.
Jack is somewhat of a timid person. His views in the world are very narrow as he is caught up in material things. For example, his whole apartment is furnished with products from this upper class catalog which he is infatuated with. The fact that he has dedicated his life to this Ikea catalog shows some signs of weakness. To him, nothing matters except for his comfortable apartment. Instead of dealing with the problems in his life such as insomnia, he takes on a second personality. This new character Tyler, takes on a new and different look at life unbeknownst to Jack. This character focuses more on violence as a way to solve his problems. Where Jack would normally avoid confrontation and violent acts, his new personality takes them on for fun. This is where the "Fight Club" comes into play. Jack used to attend self-help classes for the sick, to make him feel better about himself and aid in sleeping. Now, suddenly this violent side of Tyler has brought Jack a new lease on life. His classes are no longer needed do to the violence of fighting and the release it gives him.
In the movie, Tyler creates a group that is almost like an army. This group is made to act on Project Mayhem. This mission starts by destroying material things such as starbucks coffee shops that people don't need, but they just go to them because they can. In the end, the purpose of this project is to destroy every credit card company that houses debt records.
