If the Zulu don't show the appropriate respect for them, this action will bring calamity. On the other hand, if they show appropriate respect it will bring them benefits. The Zulu ancestors are male ancestors usually the head/man priest and chiefs. They become ancestors through inheritance from male father to son. The spirits of the ancestors live in or under the earth and are identified with the earth. They have connection with the village, the umsamo, the cattle corral, and they are mainly in the place where spiritual ceremonies are performed. .
The Zulu also find power in medicine. The Zulu tradition believes in medicine power and that this power stands on its own and not on the power of Umvelinqangi or the ancestors. The herbalist together with the patient will work to find the means and perform the right act to produce healing and protection. The Zulu practice traditional medicine but are adding new ways to practice it. The Zulu and Yoruba people seem to have almost the same idea of what is real for them with the difference that for the Yoruba power comes from the God of the sky. .
For the Yoruba whatever has supremacy and power is real. The power comes from Olorun, which means "owner of the sky" and acclaims the Almighty God who lives in the heavens. Thomas E. Lawson says, "For the Yoruba Olorun is the originating power in the cosmos" Every other supremacy like the orisa, the ancestors and every form of life owe their existence to him. Olorun has given them the powers to do a built a system that serve as peacekeepers between him and the world around them. For the Yoruba the Almighty God is considered severe, distant and hard to come within reach of. Even though they pray to him, they do not make places of worship to honor him nor they direct ceremonies or sacrifices to appease him. In fact, they deviate their attention to the gods that have minor powers and use them as intermediaries between this world and the other world (Lawson, page 65).
