Paul Waggoner, an American Aid in Haiti, Faces Kidnapping Charges

" However, the baby's rigor mortis might have been the cause of Philistin's belief that the baby was not dead. Philistin said, "My son is not dead. When I tried to close his eyes, they wouldn't close. When I tried to close his mouth, it wouldn't close." Instead, he claims, "He was sick but he was not so bad. Some people came up, they put something in his veins. I don't know what they put in his veins. Then he died." However far-reached this accusation seems to Americans, Haitians strongly believe that a person is capable of being turned into a zombie, which is defined by a prolonged coma-like state (Troutman). .
Waggoner's history is anything but clean. In 2007, he was accused of kidnapping a former friend, holding him hostage, and beating him with the blunt end of an ax. These charges were eventually dismissed. However, he did plead guilty to one charge of assault and battery of which he received an 18-month suspended jail sentence and two years' probation. MMRC's co-founder, Paul Sebring, believes this charge was somewhat biased. He claims, "He got the assault and battery charges because he beat up a pedophile. LP [Little Paul] was on a construction site. This guy was talking about a little girl he molested, and LP lost it and beat the crap out of the guy." The man Waggoner assaulted did turn out to be a registered sex offender with a long criminal record, including offering money and jewelry to a 12-year old girl in return for sex and assaulting a mentally disabled female acquaintance. A follower of Waggoner's Facebook group "Free LP," which raises awareness of his imprisonment, said, "I think we all have things in our past that we would rather not have everyone aware of. Let he who has no sin be the first to cast the stone." Waggoner's rap sheet goes on to list many other incidents (Troutman). .
However, despite Waggoner's criminal history, it is pretty clear to people in Haiti that he is innocent (Troutman).
