Homosexuality - Born Gay or a Choice?

Much of the current media sources assume the question is a solved scientific problem with all the evidence pointing toward a biological basis for a homosexual orientation, indicating that people can be born gay. Contrary to this perception, the question has been poorly studied, although there is some evidence on both sides of question. In addition, many of the initial studies, which were highly publicized by the media as proof for a biological basis for homosexuality, have been contradicted by recent, more thorough studies. Most would agree that people are not born homosexuals, but instead become homosexual in their sexual orientation through cultural and environmental factors. This paper provides an analysis of a survey conducted among students enrolled in SS3375-XTIA-2013-T2 to obtain the classmates' perceptions on whether or not they believe people are born gay or choose to be gay.
             Methods of Research.
The purpose of this research was to either reject or accept the following hypothesis: among students enrolled in SS3375-XTIA-2013-T2, most would agree that people are not born homosexuals, but instead become homosexual in their sexual orientation through cultural and environmental factors. To test this hypothesis, a survey was constructed to acquire and analyze the classmates' perceptions on whether they believe people are born gay or choose to be gay. .
The survey was distributed to all students enrolled in the course; of the 29 students enrolled the survey yielded 18 survey responses. Each of these questions was multiple choice questions in which the student could only provide one answer. The first two questions, along with question #6 consisted of basic demographic information including age, gender and community type. The next set of questions inquires about the students' beliefs and preferences including sexual preference, religion and denomination. .
Questions 7 and 10 are the foundational questions of this research study; for these questions are specifically geared towards the students' perceptions of homosexuality.
