Emotional Intelligence and Educating Youth

 

The article was broken into three distinct sections in which each section focused on a specific area correlating to this topic. The article began by offering a stance on what the ultimate goal of education is. Next, the definition of emotional intelligence was addressed. There were three offered definitions, each with their own twist on the subject however, each centered on the fact that emotional intelligence fosters healthy emotional growth. Lastly, the authors offered ways in which emotional intelligence could complement lesson plans and become integrated into an academic curriculum.
             Evaluation of the Sources.
             Many references were included at the end of the article which helped the authors construct their solution. Further examination of the sources allowed me to understand the perspective in which the authors were constructing their solution. The sources varied by subject and also opinion. Some of the sources provided scientific evidence of emotional intelligence and its relevance while other sources argued the relevance. The scientific perspective was not the only perspective to be considered by the authors of this article, educational perspectives were also cited. The author did a good job of including information from both disciplines rather than focusing on just one. The sources proved to be reliable. I was able to look up the cited authors and their publications to see if their work was peer reviewed or belonged to published books. .
             Evaluation of the Authors.
             There are three contributing authors to this article Elizabeth Wadlington, Alicia Enloe and Shirley Jacob. All three of these authors are professors of education at the University of Southeastern Louisiana. Of the three, Elizabeth Wadlington has been the only one to publish research beyond this article. The research that Wadlington conducts looks at issues relating to education. In regards to the discipline of education none of these people are key thinkers in the field however they are nonetheless educated and well trained professionals.
