Same Sex Marriage in the Philippines

 

            Same-sex marriage, defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary, is the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage. It is often times called gay marriage or equal marriage. There are over 18 countries that have legalized same-sex marriage. Some of the countries included are: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, England, France, Iceland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Scotland, South Africa, and Spain. Philippines, on the other hand, is still on the verge of endless debates and discussions. .
             We live in a very judgmental and unequal world. A lot has fought for their rights and equality. The blacks have already won their fight, as well as women seeking for equal and fair judgment. Now, the LGBT (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender) community, which continues to increase, and supporters are battling for the same cause. In the Philippines, same-sex marriage has been an issue following the RH bill, which was also a hot topic in the country. There have been rumors circling the country that the next target of the senate is to legalize same-sex marriage. There people who support the legalization as well as people who are not for the legalization. With this being said, I am for the legalization of same-sex marriage in the Philippines. .
             The number one proponent in the anti same-sex marriage in the Philippines is the Catholic Church. Philippines being the bastion of the faith in Asia, the church strongly opposes gay marriage. Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz, archbishop of Lingayen, Pangasinan, stated in an interview that same-sex marriage is against the natural law, the human law and the divine law. He stated that once the Senate passes the bill they would have to change the constitution as well as the Family Code of the Philippines, which states that a marriage is for a male and a female. Marriage is a sacred sacrament that needs to be respected.
