Admissions Essay - Personal Statement

" Wherever the art of medicine if loved, there is also a love of humanity.
One of the reasons why I choose medicine is that I feel there is a moral obligation to assist people. Today innumerable people are suffering by various ailments; these fortunately can be healed by medicine. The figures and statistics are daunting and are a cause of concern. The world simply needs more doctors. There is around 1 doctor for every 368 people in the UK, 1 doctor per 310 people in France, 1 doctor per 260 people in Germany, 1 doctor per 400 people in U.S.A. The 3rd world countries well most have less than 1 doctor per 1000 population. The situation is pretty dire at the moment. If I become a doctor this situation could slightly improve, it would have potential benefit to other people, as I may become a doctor for another 300-400 people. Who knows some lives could be saved! .
One of my keen interests lies in anatomy, since the past few years I have been fascinated by the human body. I admire Gray's anatomy as it provided numerous scientific names and I regard it as extremely influential. I spent a good amount of my time studying medicine; I'm an avid reader of books. I also get updated on medical research via BMJ and BNF. As well as reading BMJ for the sake of medicine I also benefit from it as it employs various statistics and the format of a study that can be useful for statistics and probability in mathematics or in general English because I think it broadens one's brain in a good way. I study chemistry for the leaving certificate and this subject introduces us to the mechanisms of organic synthesis and various different functional group. Some of the cancer drugs such as taxol can be prepared using this reaction method; tetracycline an antibiotic can also be prepared using the technique. Few years ago I was obsessed with the periodic table even though then we were not required to memorize or even know every single element but I had a zeal for knowledge.
