Saving the Environment - Learning from Dr. Seuss

Many of us are familiar with the Lorax, the character invented by the late, great Dr. Seuss, who incessantly tried to save the Truffula trees from destruction by the greed-driven villain, the Once-ler. Ahead of its time, visionary, or just stating the obvious, Dr. Seuss's story of the Lorax and the Once-ler is not too far off from what is happening today and reminding us of the environmental dangers that we could soon face (Lawson, 2012). Today, scientists that study climate change believe that global warming is a big issue and a serious threat to our economy. They suggest that we take immediate action to alleviate the effects of this major problem. Based on existing scientific findings, global warming does exist today and is occurring at a fast rate (IPCC, 2013). The change in temperature is associated with increases in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, mainly carbon dioxide. The effects of global warming will be radical enough within the next few decades to cause serious threats to human health, plants, and animals (Nichols et al., 2014). Protecting our forest trees is one of many things that we all can do to slow down global warming and contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment to live in. .
Forests affect our lives every day. Everything we eat or use involves trees either directly or indirectly. From the wood that we use for many products to having a place for recreational activities, the benefits of forests are endless. They play a crucial role in our everyday lives by purifying our air and water. They also help slow down runoff, prevent erosion by holding soil in place, and preserve groundwater supplies that are important to both humans and animals. The positive impact forest trees have on our environment is often overlooked. Forests possess solutions to many of our problems, even ones as large as global warming. Global warming or climate warming refers to an increase in average global temperature, which is caused mostly by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
