This is fine news for dentistry; however, the percentage of female dentists working part-time has been two or more times that of males. Therefore, the projected shortage of dentists will include many more working a limited schedule for at least part of their careers. The shortage has already begun in rural areas and is expected to worsen.
In Washington, An increasing number of females are becoming licensed dentists in Washington. While the overall percentage of females in the workforce is 25%, the percentage of newly-licensed female dentists has been higher in recent years, up to a high point of 41% for the 2011 cohort of newly-licensed dentists. Based on the information from ADA above, females in this industry are increasing surprisingly.
