Mariah Carey

On March 27, 1970 Mariah Carey was born on Long Island, New York. She grew up in a divorce family at a very young age. Her father had left and it was now up to her mother to take care of her two of her three children. Mariah's sister Allison decided to move with her father when he had left. So Mariah's mother took care of Mariah and her older brother Morgan. At the age of four Mariah knew she wanted to be a singer. She would sometimes just sing herself to sleep and have the radio on for hours. Her mother being an opera singer, Mariah was greatly influenced by this and knew she wanted to head in some type of direction her mom was trying to do. When Mariah was growing into her teenage years it was still a big dream for her to become a singer. By the time she was seventeen she had graduated high school and now was ready to move out on her own and make it happen for herself.
At seventeen Mariah arrived in New York City in 1987. Mariah was excited at the fact her life would be changing. She felt free being on her own but was a horrible time too. She had only one pair of worn shoes, no money, no connections for stardom, but had a lot of confidence in herself. Most importantly she had a burning desire to make it on her own. Mariah's mother had insisted on giving her money but Mariah felt she had to make it on her own with no help. Mariah had shared an apartment with two roommates that were struggling like her. Mariah had to settle sleeping on a mattress on the living room floor.(Nickson).
For a couple of months living in the city she was totally dedicated in the matter in survival. It was hard for her and the roommates trying to get the rent together every month. Food was ever a more scarce for them. A box of macaroni and cheese would last them a week. For several months it was so bad that Mariah would live on a bagel and an iced tea a day which she would bum off of a sympathetic deli owner.
