Guitar Highway Rose by Brigid Lowry

The need to attain a sense of belonging is also conveyed through the use of Asher's' character and the lack of belonging he feels towards Perth and how he truly feels he belongs back in Byron Bay. "Mum, don't freak but I'm going back to Byron. I just can't hack it here". This brings to the fore, that belonging can be directed towards a place and not just to a group or society. Through Asher, who feels the sense of belonging towards Byron Bay, the effect that text types have on a story is explored, and through the use of the letter in the book the reader is shown personal emotions and feelings expressed within the contents. As highlighted above, through Guitar Highway Rose, the incorporation of belonging within fictional texts is able to be successfully explored showing the power which works of literature have with exploring universal themes of the human experience. Belonging can also be influenced through the longing for freedom and the effects that freedom has on an individual and belonging with a society.
Through works of literature the inclusion of the theme of freedom further supports the examination of universal themes of the human experience. The longing for freedom is explored effectively through Brigid Lowry's Guitar Highway Rose through the use of different characters, their relationships with each other and their desires for independence. "When Nigel and I were together I longed for my freedom and now what have I got in the way of a social life". This exaggerates the longing for freedom that Malvina wanted when in a relationship with Nigel, showing that when she did gain freedom it wasn't necessarily what she wanted. And through Lowry's use of a narrator's voice it creates a direct connection with Malvina, reinforcing to the reader that you don't always get what you want when given freedom. The longing for freedom is also explored within the text through Rosie's character and her need to be free.
