Some of the new technologies that have shown up in surgeries have been lasers, robotics, and computer-assisted surgeries. Most of these types of surgeries that are performed using the technologies is call minimally invasive surgeries or MIS for short. Minimally invasive surgery uses either an endoscope or laparoscope and the doctor makes only two or three small incisions into the patient. Most of the time doctors call this type of surgeries Band-Aid surgeries because they only need to put one or two stitches in the incisions and then put a Band-Aid on it instead of a big bandage. These types of surgeries make it easier for the patient and the doctors because there is less cutting to do on healthy tissue and less time for a patient to recover from the surgery. ROBODOC is the first computer-controlled and imagine-directed robot to do a hip replacement in 1992. This type of robot can only do cementless implants, which is about one-third of the implants that is done each year. This robot cuts into the femur of the patient with the help of a three-dimensional image of the patient's hip. The doctor plans the surgery using the image and programs the robot with it. ROBODOC is up to ten times more accurate than a human being when it comes to this type of surgery. AESOP or automated endoscopic system for optimal positioning was introduced in 1994. It is the first FDA-cleared surgical robot. This robot was originally developed for the space program and now it is an assistant in endoscopic procedures. It holds and moves the endoscope under the direction of the surgeon. At first the system was developed to be controlled using foot pedals but now it is controlled by voice command. If the system does fail to recognize the surgeon's voice or commands there are manual controls the surgeon can use. This system has been used is a wide variety of procedures like appendectomy, splenectomy, and relief of intestinal obstructions.
