Exploratory Essay on Stem Cell Research

Furcht states in this article "Embryonic stem cells have the capacity to recreate and repair any of the body's tissues and organs" (Hoffman, Furcht). In Addition, Hoffman believes "Adult stem cells, like those present in bone marrow, have the potential to repair some tissues and organs but not all" (Hoffman, Furcht). In making this comment, Furcht and Hoffman believe the different types of stem cells hold their own advantages. Scientists also believe a patient's own stem cells could be taken and used in the patient's favor, eliminating the chance that the patient's immune system would reject them (Clouthier). Dr. Goldstein from the University of California published an article in Nature to show the public that stem cells are useful even if they do not lead directly to a treatment ("looking up"). He believes that studies like his can lead to more scientific value then clinical trials ("looking up"). .
There has been many different political views over the years regarding this topic. The government faces the judgement of the people over every decision they make. I understand why they have been cautious about these decisions due to not wanting to start a bigger uproar. Before scientists could even isolate stem cells, the government passed the dickey amendment which prohibited federal funding to create or destroy human embryos ("stem cell research"). In 2001, President Bush announced a new plan "The federal government would fund research on cell line already in existence but would not fund research on new lines, due to it encouraging destruction of more embryos" ("stem cell research"). When Obama took office he lifted the restrictions on federal funding for stem cell research ("stem cell research"). He said "I believe we are called to care for each other and work to ease human suffering" ("stem cell research").
