The Life and Works of Beethoven

Beethoven's compositions used choral features in a way that had never been done before. Beethoven skill in incorporating choral effects was showcased most boldly in his 5th and 9th symphonies.5 In his 9th symphony, Beethoven masterfully created a finale that featured the chorus. Allowing the wonder of the human voice to command the ending. This was one of the latest noticeable moments during his career, in which Beethoven really broke musical boundaries; during the finale of his 9th symphony. The use of choral voice in the end of the piece had never really been done before in a popular composition. Beethoven's feelings were impossible to express using simply the instrumental sound. The breaking of classical music barriers opened the floodgates for countless other composers, giving them the liberty to experiment in their own work.6 However, in the 5th symphony, Beethoven's more timid approach proved his impeccable ability to layer in choral elements rather than have the piece revolve around them.7 In contrast, by the composition of his 9th symphony, Beethoven was completely deaf.8 In contrast, some credit Beethoven's innovative choral capabilities to his deafness. This theory argues that Beethoven was not imprisoned by the limitations of hearing and sound. Without being forced to hear the notes, Beethoven was able to have an entirely different perspective of the music. Beethoven is considered to be the chief musical engineer in using tone to structure and build a piece. This process is known as "architectonic use of tonality." Beethoven used his special abilities to innovative music and composition.
Beethoven was influential in the musical world because of his fight against patronage. While Beethoven was up and coming, nearly all artists were funded by patronage. This means that every piece of art was commissioned by nobles and performed privately for small groups.10 This was obviously unfair to the artists because it handicapped their capability for influence.
