Thankfully, Murphy got lucky and nothing bad happened to him. Despite the fact that Murphy turned out to not be badly affected by not listening to the doctor, the outcomes could have been different. Murphy stated that without the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, he would never be able to get any support or even sign up for health insurance anymore (Nather, 2011). He talked about health insurance and said, "They're treating it like a game, like there's no people involved; they need to start looking at what really happens. I'm not a statistic. I'm a real person" (Nather, 2011, pg. 7). Murphy waited until October the first and thanks to The Affordable Care Act, he was able to sign up for health insurance. .
Murphy and other people like Murphy benefited from The Affordable Care Act of 2010. As a matter of fact, about two and a half million teenagers have health insurance on their parents plan; In the years 2011 and 2012, about five million elderly people and people who have disabilities saved about three million dollars they would have spend on prescription drugs if it wasn't for the Affordable Care Act (The White House, 2012). According to the White House (2012), "These savings include a one-time $250 rebate check to seniors who hit the "donut hole" coverage gap in 2010, and a 50 percent discount on brand-name drugs in the donut hole in 2011". Furthermore, people like Murphy who were not able to pay for services such as mammograms, angiogram, and tests for cancer screening, where able to get it without paying a penny from their pocket; everything was made free for them. Because of Obamacare, the insurance companies can not deny coverage for people who had pre existing sickness anymore. Moreover, "Insurance companies can no longer drop your coverage when you get sick because of a mistake on your application, put a lifetime cap on the dollar amount of coverage you can receive or raise your premiums with no accountability" (The White House, 2012).
