I Am an Addict

Hello, my name is Hidalia ________, and I am an addict. No I'm not an addict to drugs or alcohol, but to the digital world. I never realized how important it is to me and how much I use on a daily basis (Until my college English class decided to do an experiment to go 24 hours without any media.) As easy and simple as it sounds it ended up being more challenging than I had predicted. Before starting the experiment, we read a couple of articles to see other people's views in what they think about the digital world. .
Before starting the challenge, I decided to focus more on how I use the media to see if I have a pattern going on. I noticed that when I wake up the first thing I do is grab my phone and look through every social media I have like Snap Chat then I reply to my messages and open emails. Once I'm finished looking through all my social media witch take about 15 minutes I begin with my day. Throughout the day, I noticed that I check my phone a lot. Once I hear a little sound I quickly go to grab my phone and check. I use my phone to talk to my friends and family. The reason I believed I wasn't an addict was because there are some parts of me that are still old fashioned. I still have and use a house phone to talk to my friends and family because it's more personal. I think it's better than just texting them. In the book; Alone Together by Sherry Turkle when a student said, "A phone conversation is personal because you don't have time to sit there and think about what you're going to say. What you have to say is just going to come out the way it's meant to" (605). That is a perfect reason why I still use it; because texting can be complicating sometimes you don't understand what the other person is writing about. .
I love listening to music when I do just about anything. I even need music when I drive my car. Jumping to Saturday the day before starting the experiment I made sure to tell everyone I talked to not to text me because I wouldn't reply, except if it's for an emergency to witch they should call me.
