America's War on Sex

My eyes have been opened to the fact that there are so many instances even in the 21st century of bigotry and hatred all over personal values.
             What Surprised Me Most.
One of the most shocking things that I learned while reading America's war on sex was a theme that saturated the entire book, that the culture surrounding sex is very negative. Even coming from a catholic school I was very aware of the mechanics around sexuality by a young age, yet even a cursory glance at what is available in the media supports this study. The spin of media is almost entirely negative in its connotation. Even when this type of propaganda is successful in creating one of the "successful" outcome of abstinence one can expect young people to still engage in sexual activities regardless, though with much less information that could potentially allow them to avoid an unwanted pregnancy or STIs. In the description of the "Consequences of Abstinence Education" found in this book there are nothing but harmful statistics including one third are not expected to use contraception, those with an abstinence pledge are just as likely to gain an STI, and that those who do not engage in intercourse are more likely to have oral sex while still believing themselves to be abstinent. Despite this fact many of these programs are still indicated to be a success by the number of young adults who have pledged to save themselves until marriage. Even in the case where they are not considered a success the media will never announce the sheer irresponsible consequences of this type of schooling. What is truly the most sad about this type of education is that those who eventually do end up having sex will feel guilt in the real or imagined eyes of their parents, friends, and even god. Tragically there was a period in which sexual education was present in some of these fairly backward states, but a slippery slope fallacy was introduced saying that rampant promiscuity was promoted because students were advocated to use contraception.
