Taoism - Meaning and Purpose in Life

When the three are practiced in daily life, understanding and harmony with the Tao can be pursued. The "Three Jeweles" has provided adherents with a code or practice to follow in search for greater meaning to life and to live in harmony with the Tao.
"Knowing something about the way of life that gives rise to original thought is important because this knowledge allows us to rediscover facets of ourselves that have been neglected and forgotten" (editors of consumers guide, 2007). Taoist beliefs of how the universe was created are distinct and unique, and have provided the believers and followers of the religion with answers to life. It gives greater depth and meaning to life and how the world came to be as it is today. The Taoist theory of creation is extremely complex and hard to understand however in simple terms, the Taoists believed in a series of events that took place; they believed that at the beginning of time there was "chaos" and "disorder" and the order was waiting to hatch in the form of an egg. Thousands of years later the egg had hatched and pure substances named Yin emerged into the "heavens" while less pure substances named Yang created the earth. From these substances (Yin and Yang) a giant named "Pan Ku" was created and then created the Earth we know today. Pan Ku died 18 000 years later and various parts of his body formed elements of the Earth (eg. His breath became the wind). This creation story is called "the Myth of Pangu" and contributed to ancient and modern Chinese culture as it gave rise to rituals, symbols (such as the Yin and Yang), practices, sacred sites and traditions which all involve the worshipping of Pangu. The Daoist stories of creation helped the Daoist followers to understand a deeper concept and understanding of life and gave insight of how life came to be.
Taoists do not so much worship a particular supernatural being, they rather believe in the guidance of supernatural beings and powers.
