Sex Ed in Schools

The Internet can be great for lots of things but can also be a bad influence on adolescence. The Internet is full of porn websites, pictures of men and women posing naked and anybody has access to it. Being able to view these things exposes teens to a whole other world of sexual content, which can influence teens not always in a positive way. Today's music is full of sexual references for example in the song Candy Shop by 50 Cent, 50 Cent is making references for girl to let him have sex with her. In the video games Grand Theft Auto your character can get a blowjob from a prostitute. On Sims the characters can have sex. There was a study done by Rand Corp. in 2004 and the study said, " Adolescents from age 12 to 17 who 'Viewed more sexual content' at the beginning of the study 'were more likely to initiate intercourse and progress to more advanced non-coital sexual activities' (Friedman, 772). This study shows how the media has negative effects on teens and sex. If teens had sex education classes, they could learn how the media distorts sex by displaying it as something that has no consequences in the long run.
Parents do not always feel comfortable talking to their teenagers about sex and how to protect themselves from STD's and unwanted pregnancies. If they do not feel comfortable about it or are not there for there children, then teens should be able to have an educated adult inform them about sex. Amy Frykholm says that, "It helps them to analyze their own behavior and sometimes even to critique the culture that gives them bad or misleading information all the time"(Frykholm, 772). This shows that an influence can help teens make the right decisions. I have a friend that has parents that refused to acknowledge that she was curious about sex and wanted to learn about the multiple birth control methods and sex education classes were not provided in our high school.
