The California Drought: 2014-2015

According to keepcaliforniafarming.org/ 100% of artichokes, cauliflower, dates, and dried figs, and 99% of all walnuts come from California. (Kriesi, 2014, 1-6) Todd Southam a farmer from Durham, California a small town in northern California, he explained a slight amount about the water rights in the water districts he farms in. He said he farms in the Colusa and butte water districts although they are close in proximity they have different rules and regulations. In 2010 the Colusa water district gave him 85% of his water and the Butte water district gave him 90% of the water he needed. In 2014 the Colusa district gave him 50% of the water he needed and the Butte district gave him 40% of the water he needed. As a whole he said he had to drill 4 new wells on ranches and farms that he used to not have to use ground water on. Todd said that he has been talking to some farmers that he knows from central California and a lot of water districts have cut up to 90% of water from the counties to farmers. Todd also said that many farmers he knows who farm in the central California area have sold water to other farmers and stopped farming. (Todd Southam, Personal Conversation, 2015) Within the last two years numerous wells have either been newly drilled or deepened because the California water table is decreasing fast. According to mercurynews.com there has been lots of intense pumping for a few years and the water tables have gotten dangerously low in places such as the San Joaquin Valley and Paso Robles. (mercurynews.com) this shows that central California is in a real situation and there are many places that barely have any water below them in there wells and the water table isn't getting replenished each year. The facts just keep going on and on There are many proposed solutions but most just beat around the bush and don't get anything done. Although agriculture in California is very important the environment is also.
