Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) - Chickens

The result of this is that farmers have a high demand of meat that they have to produce to meet the high demand of people wanting to eat meat. This results in farmers looking for new methods and techniques to raise chickens faster and bigger to meet the demand the American population is requesting. This led to the creation of GMO (genetically modified organism) broiler chicken. The GMO broiler chicken can reach adulthood in about six weeks which is impressive when compared to a 1950 chicken that took around fifteen weeks to reach adulthood and has breasts that are 80% larger than the original chicken (The Genetically Modified Chicken). This also leads complications to the health of broiler chicken, because of the GMO that is inserted in the chickens, skeletal problems and organ problems arise through the life of the chicken. According to Peta members that observe chickens being bred in companies farms such as Tyson, "Skeletal problems, especially in the legs, are common among these birds, and many die from ascites, a disease thought to be caused by the inability of birds' hearts and lungs to keep up with their rapid skeletal growth. The bird's demand for oxygen exceeds its cardiopulmonary capacity" (Poultry and Eggs). Chickens are mass produced to meet the demand America needs to feed the people. There are about nine billion chickens bred every year which also leads to cramped spaces in the factories where they are bred. .
Broiler chickens are abused every year and are treated inhumanly. According to testimonies and video surveillance of people working in slaughterhouses, "Chickens are hooked up on a belt by their feet, people then slice their throats with a knife and then put them in boiling hot water to remove their feathers however, the chicken sometimes are still conscious or miss their throats being slit and are scored alive." (Poultry and Eggs). This shows how chickens are mistreated and killed brutally without acknowledgment to realize what the chicken is feeling until it reaches its death by either bleeding to death or being boiled alive.
