Elements of Psychosis in the Movie Misery

9tpBulfB.dpuf). Rob Reiner, the director of Misery, uses this physical isolation to illustrate her psychopathic tendencies, she is unable to conform to social norms, and therefore chooses to remove herself from community. .
The entire film takes place in the winter season. Snow has an archetypal meaning of coldness, rigidity, death and lack of feeling. This can be related to Annie's mannerisms and personality. Her actions are lacking emotion. At the beginning of the film she puts on a fake alter ego, one in which she displays herself as a kind and gentle caretaker, a woman who would never dare do any harm to anyone. "There! Look there! See what you made me do!" (Misery), Annie lets her fake persona slip for a split second in this circumstance where she spills the soup all over Paul. She immediately proceeds to blame it on her anger issues, when in reality, the audience is given a glimpse of her true self. As the film progressed her psychopathic tendencies are fully displayed, cold decisions are made absent compassion and empathy is essentially thrown out the window and selfish desires take the forefront. "Shh, darling, trust me --(taking aim at his ankle), It's for the best." (Misery). The most gruesome scene within the film highlighted the true lack of compassion in Annie Wilk's character. In punishment for Paul trying to escape, she decides to permanently cripple him. As a psychotic character she does not consider the pain she inflicts on Paul, and does not give any credence to his perception of her, rather much like the snow outside, she creates an environment to trap Paul, one void of hope and filled with the imminent fear of suffering and death. .
The forest is one of the greatest symbols in myth, legend, literature and film. A forest is the place where plant life thrives, free from any control of mankind. It's shadow often time hides the sun, opposing its power and showing how strongly rooted it is to the very foundation of the earth.
