             Barranquilla, Colombia's fourth largest city, with a population of 990,547, is also known as Cuna de Proceres, Cradle of Important People. Barranquilla is located on the north Carribean coast of Colombia on the Magdalena River, 8 miles from the Caribbean Sea. Barranquilla is a beautiful city with a relaxing tropical atmosphere, with miles of beautiful beaches, water sports, diving, and snorkeling. Barranquilla is the capital of the Atlantico providence. Founded in 1629, Barranquilla was a sleepy tropical town until the mid-nineteenth century, when steamboats began navigating the river and railroads connected it with other cities in the region. It is the country's largest seaport on the Caribbean and the most important industrial and commercial center on the north coast of Colombia. Industries include shipbuilding, textile, glass, perfume, beer, sugar, and publishing. The major language is Spanish and Major religion is Catholic. It has an international airport and two universities.
             The green, red, and yellow flag with the five point star is the flag of Barranquilla. Yellow represents the great presence of Simon Bolívar, Columbia's George Washington, in the creation of the Colombian nationality. Yellow also represents the natural wealth of gold. Red represents the wealth of energy, faith and patriotism.
             The food of Barranquilla is not spicy and it does not feature dishes with names like burrito, taco, enchilada, or chimichanga. What you will find when you open a menu is a lot of chicken, beef, fish, rice, potatoes, mangos, plantains, and juice to name a few. One of the favorite desserts in Barranquilla is arroz con leche, rice pudding with cinnamon. .
             Barranquilla is much more modern than you would expect. People dress almost exactly as they do in typical United States cities. There are McDonalds, Pizza Hut, computers, and shopping malls. The business district is full of skyscrapers, dark blue suits, and banks.
