Civil War

Just think about a war in which over 600,000 American lives are lost on American soil because of nothing more or less than a difference in opinion. Well that is exactly why the Civil War took place. The war was fought within the United States between the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South) beginning in 1861 and finally ending in 1865. In this paper I wish to discuss the who, what, when, where, and why of before, during, and after the Civil War. .
There were many differences between the two sides economically, politically, and socially but all of these discrepancies were because of slavery. .
Economically the south depended on agriculture rather than industrialization because of the production of cotton. After the Cotton Gin was invented, southerners felt the need for more slaves to keep the "money-maker" of the south alive. The South was able to produce 7/8 of the world's supply of cotton. They also helped with the cultivation of tobacco, rice, and indigo. Therefore the need for slavery seemed to be more overwhelming than before. In a time period of approximately fifty years the south went from 1.1 million slaves to 4.0 million slaves. However the north relied more on industrialization. They used factories and other businesses to keep their money coming in and didn't rely on slaves to do the work because of immigrants settling into these areas.
Because of the economical controversies along came the social differences. The south followed a class-based system where there contained three different classes of people, high class, middle class, and the slaves. All plantation owners possessed slaves because it made less work for them and plus they were only gaining money rather than losing it because paying the slaves with poor food rations and living arrangements appeared to be enough. On the other hand, the north didn't live by a class system. The north had more immigrants settling to their states making it easier to be industrialized due to everyone working in factories.
