While seeking a glimpse into the human psyche of the chief in a mob family, and using his imagination to recreate those mental images in a tangible form, Mario Puzo wrote The Godfather. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Godfather unfolds itself to us entirely through the characters in the film. However hard the ability to sympathize with the roles of the characters seem to be the story is told to us from a closed world, and this is why in some cases it is somewhat inevitable. As we grow with the family, the mafia lifestyle is nearly inviting as a way of life ("The Godfather" James Berardinelli). .
The Godfather stresses the importance of loyalty within the family. Trust in a man's word is regarded to as one of the most important aspects in the film. However with the common likes of betrayal, compared to loyalty honesty is nothing ("Keeping up with the Corleones", William S. Pechter). No matter how shameful a person you become when you go against your word and grow to be known as a "rat" or a "snitch", most characters in the movie end up this way. Much is said about loyalty "to my don", "to my family." This makes for the assurance that the person is prepared and willing to go to whatever means necessary to defend their word of allegiance. "I'm with you now" stated by Michael to his father, whom at the time was in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds, is a perfect example of the devotion being stressed. The mafia life is not all The Don wants for his respectable, youngest, and favorite son. For this reason The Don, overcome with emotion, sheds a tear. In this scene, we are able to experience the true feelings of warmth The Don has towards his family, like any other respectable man.
